How It Works
Chamfer Distance measures the similarity between two point clouds (Set A and Set B). It finds the nearest neighbor in the other set for every point and sums up the squared distances.
CD(A, B) = (1/|A|) ∑ min ||a - b||² + (1/|B|) ∑ min ||b - a||²
In the visualization above:
- Blue Points (Set A): For each blue point, we find the closest red point. The blue lines show these connections.
- Red Points (Set B): For each red point, we find the closest blue point. The red lines show these connections.
- Total Distance: The sum of the average squared distances from both directions. A lower number means the shapes are more similar.
